In certain cases, a child may need a dental crown to fully cover a compromised tooth. Besides providing additional strength for a damaged tooth, dental crowns help to enhance its appearance, alignment or shape. Either porcelain or ceramic materials can be used to closely resemble the color of your child's natural teeth.
Modern dentists have five main choices when it comes to pediatric crowns: stainless steel, zirconia ceramic, resin-veneered, polycarbonate and composite strip. Each dental crown type has certain advantages and disadvantages when used in varying applications. Some of the factors that your dentist will consider when determining the best crown type for your child are strength and durability, appearance, adaptability, placement time and retentiveness.
Stainless crowns have been around for a while. They have been used for over 80 years. This type of crown consists of a mixture of iron, chromium, carbon and other metals to help protect against corrosion that can occur within the mouth. Although they are very strong and durable, their color does not match that of the natural teeth. For this reason, they are mainly used on molar teeth.
Composite strip crowns are affixed to teeth using a clear plastic form or mold with a hardening composite. These materials are certainly cosmetically attractive; however, they are more vulnerable to fracture.
Polycarbonate crowns are made from polycarbonate resin shells or acrylic, and are cemented into place using a special resin. They offer a tooth-colored restoration option that is inexpensive. Although their durability is variable, they are typically used for temporary tooth restorations.
Special types of stainless steel crowns are available with a white covering, which combines the best of both worlds: a durable crown with a resin-facing aesthetic. One drawback to resin veneer crowns is that more tooth structure must be removed.
This type of pediatric crown is constructed from zirconium oxide. Some types also contain porcelain on the external surface. Zirconia ceramic crowns are known for being extremely strong and durable, although they also tend to cost more than other types.
For children, dentists typically recommend tooth-colored crowns. Their white color offers a strong aesthetic and good durability. Silver stainless steel pediatric crowns may make a better choice for baby molars, however.
