Orthodontics

When most people think of braces, they picture clunky metal braces from the past. Many of us wore metal braces as a rite of passage when we were teenagers. We have not-so-fond memories of the experience. In reality, traditional metal braces have enjoyed a good bit of innovation in recent years, making them less obtrusive and uncomfortable as they once were.

Although metal braces are still commonly used, several other types of braces have come online to help you achieve the beautiful smile that you desire. Let's discuss three types and what is involved with them.

1. Metal Braces

Metal braces, commonly known as "traditional braces", have been around for a long time. If you are a parent, this is likely the form that you wore when you were a teenager. However, it is important to understand that modern braces are far different from metal braces in the past.

For one, metal braces are more comfortable today than ever. They also have a very low profile, meaning that they are less obtrusive and more comfortable in your mouth. Today's metal braces are constructed from titanium or high grade stainless steel. They consist of wires, brackets and elastics that help to eventually shift your teeth into their proper positions, based upon your individual treatment plan.

Pros

  • Are relatively inexpensive compared to other forms of orthodontics
  • Elastics are available in customizable colors to display your style
  • Less obtrusive than ceramic braces

Cons

  • Not as discrete as some other choices
  • Special care must be taken when brushing and flossing
  • Food restrictions

2. Ceramic Braces

What are known as ceramic braces are not normally made from ceramic today. Instead, they tend to be constructed using advanced types of plastic that are both strong and transparent. This type of braces are sometimes known as clear braces, since they are much harder to notice than traditional metal braces. Ceramic braces have clear brackets and use white elastics that more closely resemble the color of the teeth.

Pros

  • Less noticeable than metal braces
  • Same length of treatment as metal braces

Cons

  • The materials can become stained, making them appear more noticeable
  • Cost more than metal braces
  • Same eating restrictions as metal braces

3. Invisalign

Invisalign is an advanced orthodontic system that can straighten your teeth, while remaining virtually invisible due to the use of clear plastic aligners. These aligners will be swapped out periodically for a new set to gradually shift your teeth into their proper positions.

Pros

  • Virtually invisible. No one will be able to tell that you are wearing them.
  • Aligners are easily removable for brushing and flossing
  • No food restrictions due to removeability of plastic aligners

Cons

  • Since Invisalign aligners are removable, patient compliance is needed for it to work
  • Not always suitable for very difficult cases
